Vail’s Top Events and Festivals

By Aaron from ALLTrips.com

Just because Vail has been called “America’s #1 Ski Resort” 14 times in the last 17 years doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do but ski. Year-round events and festivals ensure that you’ll have just as much to do, and just as much fun, off the hill as on. Here’s a sample of what Vail has to offer.

Snow Daze
When: First week in December
What: Kick off the winter season at Vail with Snow Daze, North America’s biggest winter-opening party. Discount tickets and lodging will help you start the season off right, and plenty of free schwag, contests and demos of this season’s latest and greatest gear will be sure to get you in the mood to really celebrate during the Demolition Derby and rockin’ live concerts.

CarniVail
When: Middle of February
What: Come celebrate Mardi Gras in style when all of Vail turns out to turn Bridge Street into a steamy New Orleans’ party. If the Fat Tuesday parade and free concert aren’t enticing enough, you owe it to yourself to come for the crawfish cookout at the top of the gondola; it’s probably the only time you’ll get to dine on down-home southern cooking like this when you’re 10,350 feet high.

Spring Back to Vail
When: Closing weekend, middle of April
What: Come join all the local and out-of-towners alike as everyone commemorates another great year with Spring Back to Vail, Vail’s one-and-only end-of-the-season celebration. Free food and concerts by big names like O.A.R and Chris Isaak, parties, discount tickets and lodging and, best of all, the World Pond Skimming Championships make this the biggest celebration of the spring.

Vail Film Festival
When: First week of April
What: Every year the Vail Film Institute, a nonprofit arts organization, brings in the best new independent films of the year for your viewing pleasure. Between movies, drop in for a film class, meet celebrities and filmmakers and enjoy the live music and parties. Just be sure you make some time to make some turns on the slopes as well.

Taste of Vail
When: First week of April
What: This is your chance to live it up like Vail’s finest. Spend four days sampling everything the best restaurants in Vail have to offer, along with the best wines from around the country, and enjoying live auctions, dances, après ski tastings and a picnic served up atop Vail Mountain. Taste of Vail also hosts the annual Colorado Lamb Cook Off.

TEVA Games
When: First week of June
What: It’s only the biggest mountain and extreme sports competition and celebration of the year. Whether you’re an amateur downhill or cross-country rider, a professional climber or kayaker, an endurance multi-sport athlete or a couch potato that just likes to watch people do incredible things while listening to live music, you’ll can’t miss this event.

Bud Light Hot Summer Nights
When: Tuesday evenings in the summer
What: This locals’-favorite free concert series has everything from rock-and-roll to funk to bluegrass. Come join the whole town at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for what very well might be the social event of the week.

Bravo Vail Valley Music Festival
When: June through August
What: This yearly summer concert series brings in some of the best musicians from all over the world to perform right in Vail. Sit back on the lawn as world-renowned soloists and groups like Yo-Yo Ma, Orion Weiss, the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic bring the beautiful outdoor Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater to life. Tickets start around $25.

International Dance Festival International Evenings of Dance
When: First weekend of August
What: While every night of the International Dance Festival’s summer performances are worth attending, if you can only make one or two nights be sure to go for the International Evenings of Dance. These nights cover everything from classical ballet to Brazilian capoeria, all performed by the world’s top performers. If you can’t make it either of these nights, be sure to check the line-up for the rest of the summer for big names like Savian Glover and the Miami City Ballet. Tickets start under $20.
